Canada in its “Online Harms Bill” gives itself the right to effectively put a person who in the judgement of whomever they let judge such things has been guilty of some form of “legal but awful” speech under house arrest and take away their internet access as well.

Pre-Crime: Canada’s Justice Minister Defends “Online Harms Bill” Powers To Place People Under House Arrest, Cut Internet Access
Justice Minister and Attorney General Arif Virani is currently defending a bizarre provision contained in the country’s “online harms” (C-63) bill that allows the authorities to place people under house arrest out of “fear” they could, at some point in the future, commit a “hate crime.”
So this is a species of pre-crime – treating someone as a criminal on the grounds they may commit a crime.
Virani explained that such a peace bond could impose restrictions on people approaching “a synagogue or a mosque” (presumably, also a church). Or, their use of the internet, but also somehow behavior could get “restricted,” he continued.
“That would help to deradicalize people who are learning things online and acting out in the real world violently, sometimes fatally,” said the official.
C-63 also seeks to introduce the life sentence for those who commit “a hate crime offense” along with another type of crime.
We have seen various countries attempt to censor online speech in myriad ways including having governments both foreign and domestic lean on Big Tech to censor whatever the government’s wish to suppress. We have seen countless categories, most of which are not remotely objectively defined, proposed for what may be censored. These include “hate-speech”, “malinformation”, “misinformation”, “disinformation”.
Here Canada goes to a whole new level and says it can prohibit someone who in their judgement is trafficking in such disallowed information from having any access to the internet much less locking them in their homes. Never mind no actual crime has been committed. Never mind that without internet access modern life is nearly impossible including most financial and business and employment activity.
This is tyranny! It has no place in any free country, or liberal democracy. It is 100% against human rights.
